The Circle

Erik Andersson Architects and ELU has been commissioned by the City of Gothenburg to design a proposal for a new pedestrian bridge, located in the historically important Haga area in Gothenburg, Sweden. It will connect the streets Haga Kyrkogata and Arkitektgatan, and stand between two existing bridges: the Rosenlund Bridge and the Viktoria Bridge. Thanks to its carbon fibre construction, The Circle is extremely light and elegant. It is designed to give a visual impression of the bridge hovering over the water. The quay cuts the bridge with the inner circle as a tangent. The white LED lights are integrated into the bridge body. In the winter, the Circle will be heated with hot air to make it snow -free.

Villa Wallin

On Yxlan in the northern Stockholm archipelago, Erik Andersson Architects has designed the archetypal house. Designed strictly by using the proportional ratio of 1:3, the house measures six meters in depth, eighteen meters in length and six meters in height. The facade windows also follow a clear pattern: they are all square in form and have the same size.

Finalist Rödfärgspriset 2014.

Bridges for RV73

The Swedish National Road Administration commissioned Erik Andersson Architects to be in charge of bridge design for the project. Esthetically, the 20 different concrete bridges were based on a theoretical system that allows the number of surfaces to be greatly reduced, while the forms change continuously depending on each bridge’s span and width. The sections flow from completely triangulated structures through curved to straight shapes in an ever-changing, yet harmonious progression, turning the bridges into members of the same conceptual family, perfectly adapted to each specific location. Safety was a key concern for the new road, which is also reflected in the bridge design with emphasis on clear views through streamlined shapes. In addition to motorists and pedestrians, even horses, elks and frogs travel safely over and on the new road – moving along their own specially designed bridges. Keeping them away from the cars on the motorway.

Bridge Apatê

One of the first bridges in the world to be constructed entirely from stainless steel, Bridge Apatê overlooks the refurbished area of Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm. The winning entry of an invited international competition, the bridge went on to not only receive a financial grant from the City of Stockholm due to its exemplary sustainability characteristics, but also to win the Swedish Steel Design Prize 2003 as the most innovative steel construction in Sweden. The bridge’s highly asymmetric section draws attention to its pioneering structural profile: a horisontal expression that mirrors that of the Bridge Sundsvall project. Collaboration with Jelena Mijanovic, Magnus Ståhl, Tyréns, Scandiaconsult, and Stålmonteringar AB Stålab.

Bridge Apatê has won the Swedish Steel Prize 2003, won the European Steel Award 2003 and was a finalist for the Blueprint Architecture Awards 2002 in the category Best New Public Building.

Galerie Nordenhake

Acclaimed Swedish photographer Åke E:son Lindman has recently shot these images of Galerie Nordenhake by Erik Andersson Architects in Stockholm. The gallery is located in a former garage, which Andersson converted into a suite of three large exhibition rooms, enabling shows of the scale and ambition for which Nordenhake’s Berlin and Stockholm galleries are well known. The 300 square metre ground floor is divided into two connected galleries and a showroom, providing the possibility of a single large exhibition or several smaller parallel shows. All the rooms have museum standard floors and loading capacity, and the office and the storages are located around the gallery rooms. The whole gallery is realised within existing structures. The space provided a design challenge due to its irregular form. By situating the office and the art storages on the edges of the space, Andersson freed the galleries from ventilation ducts and radiators. This created an ideal, neutral space, where the architecture serves the art and not the other way around. Erik Andersson has previously designed several other galleries in Stockholm, among them Brändström & Stene, the former Natalia Goldin Gallery and spaces for private collectors and artists. His long experience in creating art spaces has given him the necessary respect and understanding to work with artists in many different fields, from photography to painting and sculpture.
